Chapter 4
"Surgery again? Are you kidding? Am I on the Jaime Kennedy experiment?"

So the following week, we go to the Dr. to get the bandage changed. I was expecting a completely innocent visit. You know--Hi, Bye, all taking place under 7 seconds type of visit (I wasn't too far off about the 7 seconds part). But when the Dr. came in he said, "Oh by the way, it turns out it may be cancerous after all, we'll have the final pathology report by Tuesday." I SWEAR I looked around for the hidden camera.

(Just a side note: my doctor isn't a quack, he's actually very good, it just so happens that like 5% of the time the frozen section doesn't show the cancer so 2 surgeries are necessary). There's that 5% again. I really need to gamble, play the lotto, something....because when I went back the following week it was for sure. I had a follicular variant of papillary cancer and the rest of my thyroid would have to come out. He set me up with an oncologist (Cancer Dr.) and an appointment to have a PET scan (to see if the cancer had spread anywhere else) and sent me on my merry way.

It's worth mentioning that this is not a scary cancer by any means which is in part why I can be so light about it. If you want to read about it to put your mind at ease here's a good website. Endocrine Web
